What are concrete mesh spacers?
Concrete support for steel mesh. or Concrete spacers These are precast concrete blocks used to support, push, and reinforce reinforcing steel. Steel wire mesh (Wire Mesh) To prevent contact with the formwork or the ground during concrete pouring, its primary function is:
✅ Maintain concrete cover distance. (Concrete Covering) to comply with engineering standards.
✅ Protect the reinforcing steel from moisture. Reduce the chance of rust forming, which can cause structural deterioration.
✅ Increase structural strength. It ensures a perfect bond between the concrete and reinforced steel.
✅ Easy to install, saves time. Simplify construction projects.
Why are concrete spacers used? What is their importance in floor pouring?
Not using standard concrete spacers, or using broken bricks/stones instead, is a major cause of cracked floors and rusted steel. These are the three main reasons why engineers mandate the use of standard concrete spacers:
- Preventing iron from rusting: Concrete spacers help to keep the reinforcing steel centered within the thickness of the concrete, preventing it from coming into contact with moisture from the soil.
- Actual weight capacity: Made from high-strength cement, it can withstand the weight of cement mixer trucks or workers walking on it without breaking, unlike low-grade stones or plastic.
- One with the concrete: Because it is made of the same cement, it adheres perfectly to the newly poured concrete, preventing segregation.
Specifications and sizes of popular concrete spacers for reinforcing steel.
at AY Contento We sell high-quality precast concrete cubes in various sizes to suit different applications:
Concrete cube dimensions (height) | Suitable for this type of work. | Compressive strength (ksc) |
2.0 - 2.5 cm (1 inch) | Garage floor, general house floor (Slab on Ground) | > 250 |
3.0 - 3.5 cm. | Concrete roads, small factory floors. | > 300 |
5.0 cm (2 inches) | Foundations, ground beams, post-tensioned floors | > 350 |
7.5 - 10 cm. | Large-scale foundation work (Mat Foundation) | > 350 |
How to properly use wire mesh support blocks.
To meet the standards, the concrete blocks should be placed according to the following procedure:
- Prepare the area: Level the sand and lay down a plastic sheet as a base.
- Place the rack: Lay out the wire mesh or tie the reinforcing steel according to the design.
- Insert cement blocks: Lift the mesh and insert the concrete blocks underneath, ensuring the steel wire aligns perfectly with the grooves between the blocks.
- Wire binding: Use steel binding wire to securely fasten the mesh to the wires embedded in the concrete blocks, preventing it from shifting during concrete pouring.
- Distance: Concrete blocks should be placed approximately 1.00 meter apart. (Or approximately 1 unit per square meter) to prevent the metal from bending.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
reply: Not recommended. Because the stone blocks are of uneven thickness, the level of the reinforcing steel is inconsistent. Furthermore, the brick fragments are often highly porous, absorbing water from the concrete and weakening the concrete in that area.
reply: On average, it is recommended to use... 4-5 pieces for a standard size wire mesh sheet. Alternatively, place them every 1 meter for optimal weight support.
reply: Concrete cubes contain aggregate (stone chips), resulting in higher compressive strength than mortar (which only contains sand and cement), making them suitable for heavy-duty applications.
reply: If low-quality concrete cubes (compressive strength < 400 ksc) are used, they may crack. Standard-quality concrete cubes should be chosen.
reply: Not recommended because it's difficult to control the coverage distance, and the grille may shift position.
reply: Approximately 20-25 kg, depending on the size and number of fruits.
