Galvanizing is a process of dipping steel in molten zinc (hot-dip galvanizing). This causes the zinc to adhere to the steel surface and chemically react with the steel, creating a strong, corrosion-resistant protective layer that can provide long-lasting rust protection, even in harsh environments.
Galvanized steel pipe has a long service life, typically lasting 25-50 years, depending on the environment in which it is used, the thickness of the zinc layer, and maintenance. In normal conditions, its service life is approximately 2-5 times longer than uncoated steel.
Generally, painting is not required to prevent rust as it has been galvanized. However, if desired for aesthetics or to blend in with other structures, it can be painted over. However, it should be painted with a paint suitable for galvanized surfaces and a primer for galvanized steel should be applied first.
It can be welded, but welding will cause the weld area to lose its rust protection properties because the heat will destroy the zinc layer. Therefore, after welding, zinc cold galvanizing spray should be applied to the weld area to prevent rust.
